It's a beautiful hidden gem and an amazing spot for a picnic in the good weather. It's got some amazing walks with large open fields, a children's play park and of course the castle itself at the centre. They hold plenty of events within the grounds throughout the year so it's defiantly a place to visit if nearby. You can walk around at your leisure and there is a shop for food and gifts. It's a great place to explore and you can climb to the top of two of the towers. The large gatehouse is also open to explore. It's quite pretty inside with flower beds dotted around the grounds and therefore a good place to relax while the kids run around. There is also a guidebook on sale to give more information on the castle. lthough slightly misleading as a statement Henry VIII did own Llanthony Secunda Manor, he acquired it in 1536 when he also acquired a massive amount of lands in England and Wales at the time of the dissolution of the monasteries. Although he probably never visited what is particularly interesting about his ownership is that he kept records of all his newly acquired properties. Henry VIII appointed Clement Dace as his Bailiff and farmer of Llanthony Secunda Manor. The details of Dace's collection made in 1540 are as follows: Assize rents, rents of customary tenants payable at the terms of the annunciation of the blessed Mary and St. Michael Archangel equally as by a certain rental mode thereof by Auditor 106. 7d Farm of the rectory with all houses situated within the site and all manor of tithes, offerings, revenues, and emoluments pertaining to the said rectory. £16. Portion of tithe- namely tithe hay in Beesditch, wolpittes, Newmeade, Caerwent's Mead and the Moors 16. 10d Perquistes of Court 5.
expedition_master Letchworth Reviewed June 4, 2012 We visited Caldicot Castle on a hot sunny day in May 2012 with our two young children. The castle is on the outskirts off the Welsh town off Caldicot set in a public park. The castle is largely intact, albeit that it was extensively restored in the Victorian and Edwardian era and more recently turned in to a series of rented homes for local working families. There is plenty of parking adjacent to the castle and a children's play area next to the car park. The park around the castle is very pleasant and makes a great location for a picnic. The castle has a small gift shop and a cafe in the grounds. We took the complimentary audio guide which was really necessary to bring the castle to life as there is not as much signage as one would find in a similar English Heritage, CADW or National Trust property. Our kids had great fun playing in the children's play area inside the castle grounds and explored various parts of the castle. Some parts of the castle are occupied or not accessible to the public because they are in use as office or storage space and much of what is on display in the various parts of the castle is not original or authentic to the castle's history.
Host Info The medieval manor is one of the oldest houses in Wales and dates from the 12th century. Rarely are such properties able to be stayed in and it truly is a unique experience. While you may step back in time at the manor all the comforts of modern life are still at hand. The manor is fully heated, has wifi and Sky tv as well as modern cooking facilities. I am honoured to own such a building but in order to maintain it for future generations, it needs to be hired out so that proceeds can go towards its continued preservation. Caldicot is a small village, but with an active town centre. The manor is located near the castle and just 500 yards from the Castle Inn Languages spoken: English What's nearby Chepstow Racecourse 8. 6 km Restaurants & cafes Restaurant The Coach and Horses 0. 8 km The Castle Inn 0. 3 km The Priory Restaurant 6. 4 km Top attractions Bristol Parkway Station 16. 8 km Ski lifts Caldicot Castle and Country Park 0. 4 km Closest Airports Gloucestershire Airport 52.
